The resulting discriminant functions are linear equations where the coefficients are determined by the data. When dealing with more than two groups, multiple discriminant functions can be derived, each representing a distinct way to differentiate between the groups.

The effectiveness of a discriminant function relies on assumptions about the data, such as the independence of predictor variables and the normality of their distributions within each group. However, variations of discriminant analysis exist that relax these assumptions, making them more versatile. Applications range from medical diagnosis, where symptoms are used to classify patients into disease categories, to credit scoring, where financial data is used to predict loan default risk.
