Diskikrüpteering

Diskikrüpteering, also known as disk encryption or full-disk encryption (FDE), is a security process that encrypts all data stored on a computer's hard drive or other storage devices. This means that the data is unreadable to anyone who does not have the correct decryption key. The encryption process scrambles the data into an unreadable format, and decryption requires a key to unscramble it back into its original form.

The primary purpose of diskikrüpteering is to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access. If a device is lost or stolen, the encrypted data remains inaccessible without the decryption key, which is typically a password or passphrase. This is crucial for protecting personal information, financial data, and confidential business information.

Diskikrüpteering can be implemented in various ways. Software-based encryption, such as BitLocker on Windows or FileVault on macOS, encrypts data using software algorithms. Hardware-based encryption, often found in Solid State Drives (SSDs) with built-in encryption capabilities, uses dedicated hardware to perform the encryption and decryption, which can sometimes offer better performance.

The process typically occurs during the initial setup of an operating system or can be enabled later. When the computer starts, the user is usually prompted to enter a password to decrypt the drive before the operating system can load. Once the system is running and the drive is decrypted, access to the data is seamless for the authorized user. While it adds a layer of security, it can also have a minor impact on system performance, though this is often negligible on modern hardware.
