Directrixetäisyys

Directrixetäisyys, or *directrix distance* in English, is a geometric concept primarily associated with conic sections, particularly parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas. In the context of a parabola, the directrix is a fixed line perpendicular to the axis of symmetry, and the directrixetäisyys refers to the perpendicular distance from any point on the parabola to this line. This distance is equal to the distance from that point to the parabola’s focus, a defining property of a parabola.

For a standard parabola defined by the equation *y² = 4ax*, the directrix is the vertical line *x = -a*, and the directrixetäisyys for any point *(x, y)* on the parabola is the absolute value of *x + a*. This ensures that the distance to the focus *(a, 0)* equals the distance to the directrix.

In ellipses and hyperbolas, the term is less commonly used, but the concept of a directrix still applies.
