Dionysus is a major figure in ancient Greek religion and myth, revered as the god of wine, ritual ecstasy, fertility, and theater. He is traditionally the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele; in some Orphic traditions he is identified with Zagreus, a divine child whose birth is linked to Zeus sewing him into his thigh after Semele’s death. The god embodies both joyful revelry and dangerous frenzy, and he can inspire creative inspiration as well as destructive frenzy.
