Digil

Digil is a Somali clan, one of the major subgroups within the Digil-Mirifle confederation, commonly known as the Rahanweyn. The Digil are primarily found in southern Somalia and form a distinct element of the region's social landscape.

Distribution and society: The Digil are concentrated in Bay, Bakool, and Lower Shabelle, with smaller communities in neighboring areas. Traditionally, they are an agro-pastoral people who cultivate sorghum and maize and rear camels, cattle, and goats. Clan ties and family networks are central to life, with elders and the xeer (customary law) guiding community affairs.

Language and identity: They speak Digil varieties of Somali, part of the Cushitic branch of Afro-Asiatic languages. There is linguistic diversity within the Digil groups, and many Digil communities also use Standard Somali in formal settings and education.

History and relations: The Digil, with the Mirifle, form the Rahanweyn confederation, distinguishing them from other Somali clan families such as the Darod, Hawiye, and Isaaq. In modern times, Digil communities have experienced displacement and conflict associated with Somalia's civil wars.

Contemporary issues: In the 21st century, the Digil face drought, humanitarian challenges, and political instability in southern Somalia. Diaspora communities contribute to remittances, while cultural preservation efforts focus on language, customary law, and agrarian traditions.
