Bakool

Bakool is a region in southwestern Somalia. It is one of the country’s administrative regions and is part of the South West State of Somalia. The regional capital is Hudur. The region is subdivided into several districts, including Hudur, Rabdhure, El Barde, and Tiyeeglow.

The population is predominantly Somali. The economy is largely based on pastoralism and livestock trading, with small-scale agriculture in areas with sufficient water and rainfall. The region has an arid to semi-arid climate and depends on seasonal rains; droughts can create humanitarian needs and affect livelihoods. Trade and mobility across districts also support local economies.

Historically, Bakool has been affected by the Somali Civil War and security operations related to militant groups. Governance has involved a mix of regional authorities and federal government institutions, with international partners providing humanitarian assistance and security support at various times. Since the establishment of the South West State in 2014, Bakool has been administered as part of that federal member state, with ongoing efforts to rebuild institutions and public services.

In recent years, the region has faced challenges common to parts of southern Somalia, including insecurity, population displacement, and development needs. Efforts by regional authorities, the federal government, and international partners aim to improve governance, security, and access to services for residents.
