Diffuusori

Diffuusori is a Finnish term for a diffuser, a device or material designed to spread something more evenly. In general, diffusers aim to reduce concentration, glare, or unevenness by distributing light, sound, or air over a broader area. The concept is used across several fields, often with field-specific design choices and performance metrics.

In lighting, a diffuusori is placed in front of or integrated with a light source to scatter photons. This softens the light, lowers glare, and creates more uniform illumination. Diffusers can be made from translucent plastics, glass, fabric, or coated surfaces, and may rely on diffusion through material texture, microstructures, or coating properties. They influence luminance distribution, color rendering, and efficiency, and are common in ceiling panels, wall luminaires, and skylights.

In acoustics, diffusers scatter sound waves to minimize focused reflections and flutter echoes. They are installed on walls or ceilings in studios, theatres, and other rooms to improve acoustical clarity. Types include quadratic residue diffusers (QRD), skyline diffusers, and curved or stepped surfaces, often made from wood, foam, or plastic. Proper diffusion preserves liveliness of sound while reducing problematic reflections.

In heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), air diffusers distribute conditioned air into a space, promoting mixing and comfort. Ceiling diffusers, slot diffusers, and round diffusers vary in discharge angle, throw, and pressure loss, affecting temperature uniformity and energy efficiency.
