Diffusion is a fundamental physical process that occurs in gases, liquids, and solids, though the rate of diffusion varies significantly depending on the medium and the nature of the diffusing particles.

In gases, molecules are in constant, rapid motion and collide frequently, leading to relatively fast diffusion. Liquids exhibit slower diffusion due to the closer packing of molecules and intermolecular forces, which impede their free movement. Diffusion in solids is typically the slowest process, occurring through vacancies or interstitial spaces in the crystal lattice, and often requires elevated temperatures to significantly increase the mobility of atoms or ions.

Similarly, the exchange of ions and molecules across semipermeable membranes in cells relies on diffusion.
