Diffusorer

A diffusor, or diffuser (plural diffusorer), is a device that spreads or scatters waves or particles rather than keeping them concentrated. The term is used in several engineering fields, where the aim is to distribute energy more evenly, reduce glare or noise, or improve flow and mixing.

In acoustics, a diffusor scatters incident sound waves to create a diffuse sound field. This helps minimize sharp reflections, flutter echoes, and comb filtering, leading to more even room acoustics. Common designs include Schroeder diffusers and quadratic-residue diffusers, which use carefully spaced cavities or prismatic elements.

In lighting and optics, a diffusor is a translucent element that spreads light from a source to produce uniform illumination and reduce harsh shadows. Diffusers can be panel or sheet types made from acrylic, polycarbonate, or diffusion films, and they may be integrated into luminaires or used as standalone screens.

In heating, ventilation and air conditioning, air diffusers release conditioned air into a space while controlling direction and velocity to promote mixing and comfort. Ceiling and wall diffusers are common, often paired with grilles and ducts.

In automotive design, a diffuser at the rear of a vehicle redirects underbody flow and speeds up the exit of air to reduce drag and, at higher speeds, enhance stability and downforce. Diffusors are typically integrated into the underbody or rear bumper area.
