Diffusionkoeffizienten, often denoted by the symbol D, quantify the rate at which a substance diffuses through another medium. It is a measure of how quickly particles spread out from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration due to random thermal motion. The unit of diffusion coefficient is typically expressed in square meters per second (m²/s) or square centimeters per second (cm²/s).

The value of the diffusion coefficient depends on several factors, including the properties of the diffusing substance (its size, shape, and mass), the properties of the medium it is diffusing through (its viscosity and temperature), and the concentration gradient itself. For instance, smaller and lighter molecules generally diffuse faster than larger, heavier ones. Similarly, diffusion occurs more rapidly in less viscous fluids and at higher temperatures, as increased thermal energy leads to more vigorous random motion of particles.

Fick's laws of diffusion describe the relationship between the diffusion flux and the concentration gradient, with the diffusion coefficient being the proportionality constant in these laws. The first law states that the flux is proportional to the negative of the concentration gradient, and the second law describes how the concentration changes over time due to diffusion. Understanding diffusion coefficients is crucial in various scientific and engineering fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science, for applications such as mass transport, chemical reactions, and drug delivery.
