Differdange

Differdange is a commune and town in the southwestern part of Luxembourg, situated within the canton of Differdange in the District of Diekirch. The municipality lies near the border with France and Belgium, with the Eisbach river flowing through its center and contributing to the region's scenic river valley. As of the most recent census, the population of Differdange is approximately 20,000 residents, making it one of Luxembourg's larger towns.

Historically, Differdange grew rapidly in the 19th and 20th centuries due to the exploitation of the rich iron ore deposits that cover the southern part of the country. The founding of the steelworks in 1894 by the Sternfeld family marked a turning point, establishing the town as an industrial hub. The steel plant operated into the late 20th century, and while it scaled back during the 1990s, the legacy of heavy industry remains evident in the local architecture and cultural identity.

The town's economy today is diversified, with a focus on service sectors, small-scale manufacturing, and an increase in tourism. Notable landmarks include the former steelworks’ concrete structures, now partly converted into cultural spaces, and the Church of Saint Joseph, a prominent example of 19th‑century ecclesiastical architecture. Differdange's reservoir, the Lac de Marie, provides a recreational area for residents and visitors.

Transportation links are robust, with the A4 motorway nearby and regular commuter rail service connecting Differdange to Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, and neighboring France. The town also hosts annual events such as the Differdange International Film Festival and the Winter Festival, reflecting its active community life.
