Esch-sur-Alzette, also known in Luxembourgish as Esch op der Alzette, is Luxembourg’s second-largest city. It is a municipality in the south-west of the country and the capital of the Esch-sur-Alzette canton. The city lies along the Alzette River and includes districts such as Belval, a major area of recent redevelopment.

Historically, the area developed around mining and steel production, growing significantly in the 19th and early 20th centuries as Luxembourg’s industrial base expanded. Following industrial restructuring in the late 20th century, Esch-sur-Alzette shifted toward services, education, and research.
