Diesellokomotiver

Diesellokomotiver, often simply called diesel locomotives, are a type of railway locomotive powered by a diesel engine. This engine drives a generator that produces electricity, which then powers electric traction motors. This system is known as diesel-electric. Alternatively, some diesel locomotives use a mechanical or hydraulic transmission system to transfer power from the engine to the wheels.

Diesel locomotives became prominent in the mid-20th century, largely replacing steam locomotives due to their greater efficiency, lower operating costs, and reduced environmental impact. They are versatile and can be used for freight, passenger, and shunting services. Key components include the diesel engine, generator or transmission, traction motors, fuel tanks, and a cab for the driver.

The diesel engine's exhaust gases are typically treated to reduce emissions. Maintenance requirements are generally lower than for steam locomotives, contributing to their widespread adoption. Despite the rise of electric traction in many regions, diesel locomotives remain crucial for lines with insufficient electrification or for specific operational needs. Their development has led to various designs optimized for different tasks and environments, including specialized versions for heavy freight or high-speed passenger services.
