Dienstreizen

Dienstreizen is a Dutch term that translates to "service charge" or "gratuity" in English. It is a voluntary additional payment made by customers to service providers, such as waitstaff in restaurants, barbers, or hairdressers. The purpose of dienstreizen is to recognize and reward good service, as the base price for services typically does not include the time and effort required to provide them.

The amount of dienstreizen is usually left to the discretion of the customer, but it is common practice to round up the bill to the nearest whole number and leave the last digit as the dienstreizen. For example, if the bill is €24.75, the customer might leave €24.80, with the extra 5 cents going to the service provider as dienstreizen.

In some cases, a service provider may include a suggested amount for dienstreizen on the bill, often referred to as a "tip jar" or "tip box." This is not mandatory, and customers are free to leave more or less than the suggested amount.

Dienstreizen is a cultural practice in the Netherlands and is widely accepted as a way to show appreciation for good service. However, it is important to note that leaving dienstreizen is not mandatory, and customers are under no obligation to do so. The decision to leave dienstreizen is entirely up to the customer's discretion and their level of satisfaction with the service received.
