Dichteveränderungen refer to variations in density. Density itself is a fundamental physical property of a substance, defined as its mass per unit volume. Changes in density can occur due to several factors, most commonly temperature and pressure.

When a substance is heated, its particles generally move more vigorously and spread further apart, leading to an increase in volume and consequently a decrease in density, assuming the mass remains constant. Conversely, cooling a substance typically causes its particles to slow down and move closer together, reducing its volume and increasing its density. Water is a notable exception, exhibiting its highest density at approximately 4 degrees Celsius.

Pressure also plays a significant role in density changes, particularly for gases and to a lesser extent for liquids and solids. Increasing pressure forces particles closer together, reducing the volume and thus increasing density. This effect is much more pronounced in gases, where molecules are already far apart and compressible, compared to liquids and solids, which are generally considered incompressible.

Other factors can also influence density. For instance, the presence of impurities or changes in composition can alter a substance's density. Phase transitions, such as melting or boiling, are accompanied by significant density changes as the arrangement and spacing of molecules are drastically altered.
