Desmins
Desmins are type III intermediate filament proteins that form a cytoskeletal network in muscle cells. The DES gene encodes desmin and maps to chromosome 2q35. Desmins are predominantly expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle, with expression in smooth muscle to a lesser extent. In muscle tissues, the desmin network provides a structural framework that supports cellular architecture and coordinates force transmission during contraction.
Desmin proteins assemble as coiled-coil dimers that laterally associate into tetramers and higher-order filaments, yielding filaments
Genetic mutations in DES cause desmin-related myopathy (DRM) and desmin-related cardiomyopathy. Disease onset and severity vary,
Desmin immunohistochemistry is a common diagnostic marker in pathology to identify muscle differentiation, helping distinguish muscle-origin
