Desinfiointi is the process of reducing pathogenic microorganisms on surfaces, objects, and liquids to levels that are considered safe for health. It is broader than antisepsis, which is applied to living tissue, and differs from sterilization, which aims to eliminate all viable microorganisms. Desinfiointi is used in healthcare, industry, food production, water treatment, and domestic settings to lower the risk of infection and spoilage.

Disinfection is achieved through chemical agents, physical methods, or a combination of both. Common chemical disinfectants include alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol), chlorine-releasing compounds, hydrogen peroxide, and quaternary ammonium compounds. Typical applications include hospital and clinic surfaces and instruments, laboratories, food processing equipment, water treatment facilities, and household surfaces and utensils. Before disinfection, cleaning to remove visible soil is usually necessary, since dirt can reduce efficacy. Proper handling, ventilation, and personal protective equipment are important for safety.

Disinfectants are regulated products with approved indications and usage instructions. Guidelines from health authorities and environmental agencies influence which products are used in different settings. In many jurisdictions, compatibility with materials and potential effects on humans and ecosystems are considered when selecting a disinfectant.
