Desikkanten

Desikkanten, also known as desikanten or desikten, is a traditional form of fiberglass or plastic boat predominantly used in the coastal regions of South Asia, particularly along the Indian coast. These boats are characterized by their lightweight construction, long narrow hull, and ability to navigate shallow waters, making them ideal for fishing and local transportation.

Typically measuring between 4 to 10 meters in length, desikkanten are crafted from reinforced fiberglass or high-density plastic, which provides durability and ease of maintenance. The design usually features a pointed bow and a flat or slightly rounded stern, optimized for stability and maneuverability in coastal waters. They are often powered by outboard motors, although in some traditional settings, oars or sails may also be used.

Desikkanten play a vital role in the livelihoods of fishermen and coastal communities, facilitating small-scale fishing activities and transporting goods along the shoreline. Their lightweight nature allows for easy launching and hauling, even from beaches lacking developed dock facilities.
