Core principles include reducing the number of parts and simplifying geometry to minimize assembly steps and potential sources of error. Standardization and modularization are emphasized to simplify sourcing, tooling, and change management. Materials and processes are chosen with manufacturability in mind, favoring features that align with preferred production methods (for example, injection molding, stamping, milling, or additive manufacturing) and that facilitate automation or hand assembly. Tolerances and fit are planned to avoid excessive finishing and rework, while features are designed for ease of inspection, handling, and automated handling where appropriate.

Design for assembly (DFA) is typically integrated with DFM, prioritizing easy access, self-locating and self-fastening features, reduced fastener count, and compatibility with automated assembly lines. Early and ongoing involvement of manufacturing personnel, concurrent engineering, and formal DFMA analyses support cost target setting, value engineering, and iterative design refinement. Prototyping and testing are used to validate manufacturability, not only performance, with emphasis on reliability and serviceability.
