Descriptorisk

Descriptorisk is a theoretical construct in risk modeling that integrates descriptive attributes with probabilistic risk assessment. It defines a descriptor space in which entities are represented by vectors of descriptors drawn from domains such as performance metrics, contextual factors, and historical outcomes. A descriptorisk model combines a descriptor mapping with a risk scoring function to produce a quantitative assessment of uncertainty or potential harm.

Origins and usage: Although not standardized across fields, descriptorisk emerged in scholarly discussions in the late 2010s as a way to unify qualitative descriptors with quantitative risk metrics. It is used in risk management, decision support, and modeling of complex systems where descriptors capture context and conditions.

Formal framework: Let D be a set of descriptors, each with a domain and weighting. An instance x is a vector in D. A risk function R: D -> R+ assigns a risk score to x. Similarity measures between descriptor vectors enable clustering and retrieval of analogous risk profiles. Dimensionality reduction and probabilistic modeling may be applied to handle high-dimensional descriptor spaces.

Applications: Descriptorisk has been proposed for cybersecurity risk assessment, project portfolio risk, supply chain disruption, environmental hazards, and product safety analyses. It supports scenario analysis by modifying descriptor values and observing resulting risk scores.

Limitations: The approach depends on the choice of descriptors and their scales, which can introduce subjectivity. Computational complexity can arise with large descriptor sets, and interpretability may vary with model complexity.
