Dermatoogisesti refers to the study and analysis of dermatoglyphics, the characteristic patterns of ridges on the skin of the fingers, palms, toes, and soles. The term is used across fields such as dermatology, forensic science, anthropology, and medical genetics to describe observations and measurements of these patterns. The study draws on the terminology of derma- skin and glyphic from the idea of carved or patterned lines.

Dermatoglyphic patterns are formed in utero, typically during the first trimester, and are largely genetically influenced. Once established, they remain stable throughout life, though minor changes can occur with scarring or injury. Because they reflect prenatal development, dermatoglyphic data are used in research on genetic and developmental disorders as well as in forensic identification, where fingerprint-like patterns aid individual recognition.

Methods in dermatoogistically oriented work include classifying patterns into loops, whorls, and arches, counting ridge counts, and measuring angles such as the digital ridge counts (TFRC), total finger ridge count, and the atd-angle. Researchers may also note features like unusual symmetric patterns or the presence of a simian crease. These measures are typically analyzed statistically in relation to clinical or demographic groups.

Applications of dermatoogistically oriented research range from forensic identification and population anthropology to investigations of congenital or neuropsychiatric conditions. While certain dermatoglyphic features have been reported more frequently in some disorders, such associations are not diagnostic and results can vary by population and methodology. Therefore, dermatoglyphic findings are generally considered supplementary to other clinical or genetic data.
