Deportati

Deportati is the Italian term for people who have been deported, i.e., forcibly removed or exiled by a government or other authority. The word derives from deportare, meaning to carry away or remove. In Italian usage, deportati can refer to individuals or groups subjected to compulsory relocation, often under coercive or hostile circumstances.

Historically, the term has been applied to victims of state-sponsored removal in various contexts. In the 20th century, mass deportations occurred in many regimes and settings, including events connected to World War II, ethnic cleansing campaigns, and forced labor programs. The term is commonly used when describing civilians, prisoners, or minorities who were relocated against their will as part of policy, persecution, or war.

Legal and normative aspects surround the concept as well. International law distinguishes deportation from lawful expulsion, and in cases involving protected persons, forcible transfer of populations has been treated as a crime against humanity when part of a policy of persecution or other inhuman acts.
