Denoteor

Denoteor is a theoretical construct in linguistics and philosophy of language used to model the mapping from linguistic expressions to their denotata within a semantic framework. A denoteor functions as an operator that assigns to a given expression its referent or set of referents in a specified context or possible world. The notion helps formalize how meaning depends on context, world assumptions, and discourse structure.

Origin and terminology: The term denotes the agent or mechanism that performs denotation, formed from denote plus -or to indicate a functional role. It is distinct from related notions such as denotation, referent, and intension, and is typically used in formal accounts rather than ordinary usage.

Concept and formal role: In a formal model, a denoteor D maps expressions to denotata. For proper names, D selects a single individual in the current model; for predicates or nouns, D may yield a set or extension. Denoteors may depend on context variables such as assignment to discourse referents or world indices, allowing the denotation to vary with context. They can be composed with predicates to determine truth conditions in a given world.

Illustrative example: The phrase "the author of Waverley" has a denoteor that, in a model of literature and a given time, selects Sir Walter Scott as the referent. The same expression can have a different denotatum in another context where the author is someone else.
