Demosaikoinnin, also known as demosaicing or debayering, refers to the digital process of reconstructing a full-color image from the raw data captured by an image sensor in digital cameras and other imaging devices. Most digital image sensors, such as CMOS and CCD sensors, do not record full color information at each pixel. Instead, they use a color filter array—commonly a Bayer filter—that assigns specific color filters (red, green, or blue) to each pixel in a mosaic pattern.

The raw sensor output thus contains incomplete color information, with each pixel only capturing one color component. Demosaikoinnin algorithms analyze the mosaic pattern and interpolate the missing color data for each pixel by considering the surrounding pixels' known values. This process involves various techniques, from simple bilinear interpolation to more complex methods like edge-aware algorithms, which aim to preserve image details and reduce artifacts such as color fringing or moiré patterns.
