Demonstrativity

Demonstrativity refers to the semantic and pragmatic property of expressions that signal the status of a referent relative to the speaker, addressee, or discourse context. Demonstratives such as this, that, these, and those are the best known examples in many languages, but demonstrativity also extends to pronouns, determiners, and adverbs used to indicate proximity, visibility, or accessibility of a referent.

In grammar, demonstratives belong to the system of deixis. They anchor a reference to a deictic center, typically the speaker, and encode distance or relevance with respect to that center. Proximal forms tend to refer to entities near the speaker, distal forms to those farther away, and additional features may mark visibility, accessibility, or familiarity to the discourse participants. Demonstratives can function as determiners modifying nouns or as independent pronouns.

Typology varies across languages. Many have three-term systems with proximal and distal terms and a general or intermediate form, while others have four-term systems adding a medial or intermediate demonstrative. Some languages differentiate demonstratives by gender, case, or clitics; others rely on separate demonstratives and spatial adverbs rather than fused forms. The cognitive basis often involves spatial imagination, gesture, and shared context.

Functions and usage: Demonstratives guide grounding in discourse, mark focus, aid anaphora, and indicate definiteness or contrast. They interact with gesture and context to resolve reference, and they may encode evidentiality or other epistemic stance in some languages.
