Delay-insensitive (DI) is a theoretical model in asynchronous digital circuit design in which a circuit’s correctness does not depend on the exact delays of wires and gates. In a DI design, the only timing assumptions are that delays are finite and nonzero, and that there are no unbounded or pathological delays that could cause deadlock or incorrect results. DI circuits are analyzed with a timing-agnostic view of communication, focusing on the order of events rather than precise timing.

DI operation is typically enabled by using delay-insensitive encodings and handshaking protocols. Common encoding schemes include dual-rail (1-of-2) or similar 1-of-N representations, where information is carried by signal transitions rather than levels alone. Communication is usually coordinated by four-phase handshakes, such as return-to-zero (RTZ), where a data event is followed by a spacer and only then can a subsequent data event begin. This approach aims to ensure that valid information is recognized regardless of variable wiring or gate delays.

Circuit primitives used in DI designs include delay-insensitive gates and completion detectors, often built around synchronization elements such as the Muller C-element. The design is typically described in terms of state machines and causal relationships between events, rather than fixed timing paths. Achieving DI operation requires careful attention to avoid timing hazards that could arise from unbounded or unequal delays.

In practice, true DI circuits are difficult to realize with conventional technology. Many real-world designs adopt quasi-delay-insensitive (QDI) models that relax the strict DI requirements by allowing certain bounded delays or isochronic-fork assumptions to retain practical feasibility while preserving much of the timing robustness.

DI concepts have shaped asynchronous circuit theory and education, providing a stringent benchmark for timing-robust design and inspiring research into robust, low-power digital architectures.
