Dekanter

A decanter, sometimes spelled Dekanter in some languages, is a vessel used to hold liquids that have been poured from a bottle. Its primary purpose is to separate sediment from wine and to expose the liquid to air, which can help release aromas and soften tannins. Decanting is common for older red wines, vintage ports, and some hearty wines, and it is also used for serving spirits or water in formal settings.

Most decanters are made of clear glass or crystal to display color and clarity. They typically feature a wide, rounded body to maximize surface area for aeration and a narrow neck to control pouring. A pouring spout helps minimize spills, and some models include a stopper or lid, while others are open-topped. Shapes vary widely, from bulbous and teardrop forms to more angular designs, and some are chosen for decorative as well as practical reasons.

Using a decanter involves slowly pouring the wine from the bottle into the vessel while leaving any sediment behind in the bottle. The wine may be left to breathe for a period ranging from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the wine. Decanting is followed by careful serving, often with a proper wine glass to preserve the aromas.

Care and maintenance are straightforward: decanters should be washed by hand with mild soap and warm water, rinsed thoroughly, and dried promptly to prevent water spots or mineral deposits. Crystal decanters may require more delicate handling and occasional polishing to maintain clarity.
