Defluorierungsprozesse, also known as defluoridation, refers to the removal of fluoride from water. While fluoride is beneficial in small amounts for dental health, excessive levels can lead to fluorosis, a condition affecting teeth and bones. Therefore, defluoridation is a critical process in ensuring safe drinking water in many regions worldwide where natural fluoride concentrations are high.

Several methods are employed for defluoridation. Adsorption is a widely used technique where fluoride ions bind to the surface of adsorbent materials. Common adsorbents include activated alumina, bone char, and various other mineral-based substances. These materials have a high affinity for fluoride and can effectively reduce its concentration in water through a physical or chemical binding process.

Another important method is ion exchange. In this process, fluoride ions in the water are exchanged for less harmful ions, such as chloride or bicarbonate, present on a solid ion-exchange resin. This method is effective but can be more expensive and requires regeneration of the resin. Coagulation and precipitation are also used, where chemicals are added to the water to form precipitates containing fluoride, which are then removed by sedimentation and filtration. Electrochemical methods, such as electrocoagulation and electrodialysis, are emerging technologies that utilize electrical currents to remove fluoride. The choice of defluoridation process depends on factors like the initial fluoride concentration, desired residual concentration, cost-effectiveness, and local availability of materials and expertise.
