Defectrapporten

Defectrapporten is a documentation artifact used to report a defect in a product or system, most commonly in software development but also in manufacturing and hardware. The report communicates a deviation from expected functionality and provides information to reproduce, diagnose, and verify the defect.

A defect report typically includes: a unique defect ID, a concise title, a detailed description, the steps to reproduce, the expected behavior, the actual behavior observed, the product version or build, the operating environment (hardware, OS, browser, etc.), the severity or impact, and the priority. It may also record reproducibility, assignee, status, dates, and attach supporting material such as screenshots, log files, or tracebacks. Links to related defects or requirements are common.

Process and lifecycle: once submitted, a triage or validation step classifies urgency and impact and assigns the defect to an engineer. The defect is reproduced to confirm its existence, and a fix is implemented. After development, the defect is retested and, if corrected, closed; if not, it may be re-opened or escalated. Defect histories provide an audit trail for quality assurance and compliance.

Tools and practices: defect tracking systems such as Jira, Bugzilla, or Redmine are used to manage defect reports, workflows, and dashboards. Best practices include writing clear, reproducible steps; avoiding duplication; using precise terms; providing environment details and logs; and keeping the ticket up to date with current status and testing results.

Defect reports help teams improve product quality, track risk, and demonstrate accountability throughout the development and maintenance lifecycle.
