Decanteer

Decanteer is a verb that describes the action of pouring a liquid from one container into another. This process is commonly associated with beverages, particularly wine, but can also be applied to other liquids such as spirits, oils, or even perfumes. The purpose of decanting wine, for instance, is often to separate the liquid from any sediment that may have accumulated in the bottle over time, especially in older wines. This sediment, composed of tartrates and other compounds, can impart an undesirable gritty texture or bitter taste to the wine.

Beyond sediment removal, decanting can also serve to aerate the wine. Pouring wine into a decanter, which is typically a wide-bottomed vessel with a narrow neck, allows it to come into contact with oxygen. This exposure to air can help to "open up" the wine, softening tannins and releasing its full aroma and flavor profile. Younger, more robust wines often benefit from this aeration.

The term decanteer can also refer to the process of transferring any liquid from a larger, less convenient container to a smaller or more specialized one for storage, display, or ease of use. For example, transferring olive oil from a large tin into a decorative cruet for countertop use would be a form of decanting. The specific reasons for decanting vary depending on the substance and the desired outcome.
