Decanoates

Decanoates are esters and salts derived from decanoic acid (caproic acid). In chemistry, a decanoate refers to any compound in which decanoic acid is bound through an ester linkage to an alcohol, or exists as a salt with a metal or ammonium cation. Decanoates are typically hydrophobic and lipophilic, properties that influence their pharmacokinetic behavior in biological systems. In medicine, decanoate esters are frequently used to create long-acting formulations; when administered, the oily ester forms a depot from which the active drug is gradually released as the ester is hydrolyzed.

In pharmacology, the most well-known decanoates are long-acting hormone and drug esters. Testosterone decanoate and nandrolone decanoate are among the best-known examples, used for prolonged androgenic or anabolic effects. Other steroid hormones have decanoate or related fatty acid esters, and decanoate forms of certain drugs are used in veterinary medicine and some research contexts. Salts of decanoic acid, such as sodium decanoate or calcium decanoate, are used as surfactants and emulsifiers in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

Mechanism and properties: decanoate esters are cleaved by body esterases, gradually releasing the active drug and decanoic acid. The rate of release depends on the specific ester, the site of injection, vehicle formulation, and individual metabolism. Synthesis generally involves esterification of decanoic acid with a chosen alcohol or neutralization to form the corresponding salt.

Safety and regulation: decanoate-containing drugs can have significant pharmacological effects and, in some cases (for example, anabolic steroids like nandrolone decanoate), are controlled substances in many jurisdictions due to potential for abuse and adverse effects.
