Dataviestintä

Dataviestintä, or data transmission, refers to the transfer of digital data from one device to another over a communication channel. It is a fundamental aspect of data communications and networking, focusing on the physical and link layers of a communications system. The goal is to move bits reliably and efficiently between sender and receiver, possibly across long distances, multiple networks, or wireless links.

A typical dataviestintä system comprises a transmitter, a communication channel, and a receiver. The transmitter encodes and modulates digital information for transmission; the channel conveys the signal; the receiver detects, demodulates, and decodes it. Protocols and control mechanisms coordinate timing, synchronization, and error handling. Error detection codes (parity bits, checksums, CRC) and, in some systems, error correction enable detection and recovery of corrupted data.

Transmission media vary: wired media such as copper cables and fiber optic cables, and wireless media such as radio waves and infrared. Transmission modes can be simplexes (one-way), half-duplex (two-way but not simultaneous), or full-duplex (simultaneous two-way). Data rates range from low-bit-rate links to gigabit and higher links. Encoding and modulation schemes translate binary data into transmittable signals and manage clock recovery and signal integrity.
