Datatimestretching

Datatimestretching is a computational technique used to alter the temporal dimension of a data series by stretching or compressing time to match a reference time axis while preserving the relative order of observations. The result is a time-warped series that can be resampled to a uniform cadence or synchronized with other signals. It is applied in contexts where irregular sampling or cross-domain alignment complicates analysis.

Core methods rely on monotone time mappings t → τ(t) that transform original timestamps to a new time axis. Interpolation or model-based resampling then yields data values at the target times. Common approaches include piecewise linear or spline-based warp functions, and, for alignment tasks, dynamic time warping or derivative-based constraints to keep essential features intact.

Applications include normalizing irregular sensor streams, aligning multimodal data in research, preprocessing financial time series for comparison, synchronizing neurophysiological recordings, and augmenting datasets for machine learning by creating temporally varied but consistent samples.

Limitations include the potential distortion of temporal relationships, especially around warp boundaries; choice of warp function can introduce artifacts; careful validation is required with domain-specific expectations. Computational cost may be nontrivial for large datasets or complex warping models.
