Dataattributendie

Dataattributendie is a coined term used in some German-English technical writings to denote the set of data attributes within a data model. By combining the English phrase data attribute with the German article die, it functions as a label for the properties that describe data elements.

These attributes describe data elements such as columns, fields, or features. Typical properties include name, data type, length or precision, nullability, default value, constraints (such as uniqueness or referential rules), allowed values or value sets, units, and privacy classifications. They may also document origin, last updated date, and lineage to support traceability.

In practice, data attributes are captured in metadata repositories, data dictionaries, or data catalogs. They are the smallest units of metadata and are linked to datasets, tables, or records. Through attributes, organizations define validation rules, enforce data quality, and enable discoverability and interoperability across systems.

Classification schemes often distinguish structural attributes (schema-related properties), semantic attributes (business definitions), quality attributes (completeness, accuracy), and privacy attributes (sensitivity, access restrictions). Governance processes standardize naming conventions, data types, and documentation, and they track attribute provenance for compliance and auditability.

Note: the term is not widely standardized. In formal documentation, it is preferable to use the established German term Datenattribute or the English equivalent data attributes, to avoid ambiguity.
