Dataassimilatieprocedure is the method of combining imperfect numerical model forecasts with real-world observations to produce improved estimates of the state of a dynamical system. It is central to fields such as meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, and environmental monitoring, where frequent updates are needed. The procedure relies on statistical models of error and an observation operator that maps model space to observation space.

In a typical cycle, a forecast (background) is produced by a numerical model. Observations undergo quality control and bias correction, and an assimilation algorithm updates the forecast using the difference between observed and predicted measurements (the innovation). The result is an analysis, an improved estimate of the state. The analysis becomes the initial condition for the next forecast. Key ingredients include background and observation error covariances and the observation operator.

Methods: sequential approaches such as Kalman Filter and Ensemble Kalman Filter update the state as data arrive; particle filters handle nonlinear, non-Gaussian cases but are costly. Variational methods like 3D-Var and 4D-Var optimize an objective over a time window, with 4D-Var incorporating temporal evolution. Hybrid approaches mix elements of both families.

Practical considerations include quality control of observations, bias correction, localization to limit spurious correlations, and inflation of covariances to counteract under-dispersion. Data assimilation requires substantial computing resources and carefully tuned statistics.

Applications include numerical weather prediction, ocean state estimation, flood forecasting, and air-quality monitoring. Limitations include model bias, nonlinearity, non-Gaussian error distributions, and data sparsity or heterogeneity.
