Daminfrastructuur refers to the set of facilities, systems and structures that enable the operation, safety and performance of dam projects. It encompasses the dam body itself as well as the hydraulic, electrical and control components that manage water storage, flood control, irrigation, water supply and, in many cases, hydroelectric power generation. The field covers both new construction and the ongoing rehabilitation of aging dams.

Key elements include the dam type and foundation (e.g., gravity, arch, earth-fill, rock-fill), spillways for controlled mass discharge, outlet works and gates for releases, intake structures, penstocks and turbines for power generation, transformers and switchgear, and the tailrace that carries discharge away from the facility. Reservoir and water conveyance facilities, access roads, and protection works are also part of the infrastructure.

Operational aspects involve monitoring and control systems, power and drainage facilities, and maintenance programs. Instrumentation such as seepage meters, piezometers, rain and level sensors supports safety assessments. Emergency action plans, dam break analysis, and regular inspections categorize risk, guide retrofits and upgrades, and ensure compliance with safety standards.

Governance relies on technical standards and regulatory frameworks set by national agencies and international bodies. Standards from ICOLD, ISO and national codes shape design, construction, operation and inspection. Public agencies, dam owners and operators coordinate to fund, implement, and enforce safety practices and environmental considerations.

Challenges include aging infrastructure, climate change effects, sedimentation, ecosystem impacts, and financial constraints. Sustainable dam infrastructure emphasizes resilience, adaptive design, sediment management, and gradual modernization to maintain safety, reliability and environmental compatibility.
