Dalsnibba

Dalsnibba is a mountain in western Norway, rising above the Geiranger area in Møre og Romsdal county. It forms part of the Sunnmøre Alps and lies to the east of the Geirangerfjord, offering commanding views over the fjord and surrounding peaks. The summit reaches about 1,500 meters above sea level, making it one of the higher peaks in the region.

Access to the summit is via the Dalsnibba Road, a mountain route that climbs from Geiranger up to the plateau and viewing area. The road is typically open from late spring through autumn and is generally closed during winter due to snow and ice. The upper area features a viewing platform that provides panoramic vistas of Geirangerfjord, the valley, and the surrounding mountains, and it is a common stop for visitors to Geiranger, including cruise passengers.

Geology and environment: The area consists of alpine terrain with rocky slopes and exposed viewpoints. The climate at the summit is subalpine, characterized by strong winds and rapidly changing weather. Flora is sparse at higher elevations, consisting mainly of hardy grasses and mosses, while wildlife includes mountain birds and small mammals.

History and designation: The Dalsnibba Road was developed in the 20th century to improve access to the plateau and promote tourism in the Geiranger area. The Geirangerfjord region nearby is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding fjord landscape.
