DNSmerkintöjä, often translated as DNS records, are essential components of the Domain Name System (DNS). They are instructions that associate a domain name with specific information, most commonly an IP address. When you type a website address into your browser, your computer queries DNS servers, which then look up the corresponding DNS records to find the correct IP address to connect to.

There are various types of DNS records, each serving a distinct purpose. The most fundamental are A records (for IPv4 addresses) and AAAA records (for IPv6 addresses), which directly map a domain name to its numerical IP address. Other common record types include CNAME records, which create aliases for other domain names, allowing multiple domain names to point to the same resource. MX records (Mail Exchanger) specify the mail servers responsible for receiving email for a domain.

TXT records are versatile and can hold arbitrary text information, often used for verification purposes, such as proving ownership of a domain for services like Google Workspace or for implementing email security protocols like SPF (Sender Policy Framework). NS records (Name Server) indicate which DNS servers are authoritative for a particular domain. SOA records (Start of Authority) provide essential administrative information about the zone, including the primary name server and contact details. Understanding DNS records is crucial for managing websites, email services, and ensuring proper network connectivity.
