DNAsneiðar, often translated as DNA slicers or DNA cutters, refers to a class of enzymes that have the ability to cleave DNA molecules. These enzymes are crucial biological tools found in various organisms and are extensively utilized in molecular biology laboratories for a wide range of applications.

The most well-known and widely used DNAsneiðar are restriction enzymes. These enzymes are produced by bacteria and archaea as a defense mechanism against invading viruses. They recognize specific short DNA sequences, known as restriction sites, and bind to them. Upon binding, they make a precise cut within or adjacent to this recognition sequence. The specificity of these enzymes is remarkable, allowing scientists to target and cut DNA at predictable locations.

Restriction enzymes are categorized into three main types, based on their mode of action and the nature of the cut they produce. Type I enzymes cleave DNA at sites distant from their recognition sequence and require ATP and S-adenosyl-L-methionine for activity. Type II enzymes are the most commonly used in molecular biology, recognizing specific sequences and cutting within them, often producing either "sticky" ends (short single-stranded overhangs) or "blunt" ends (where both strands end at the same point). Type III enzymes recognize and cleave DNA near their recognition site, requiring both ATP and a second recognition site nearby for efficient cleavage.

They are essential for techniques such as DNA cloning, where DNA fragments are inserted into plasmids, and for DNA fingerprinting, where specific DNA patterns are analyzed.
