DNAprofiilit, often translated as DNA profiles or DNA fingerprints, are unique sets of genetic markers that can be used to identify individuals. This identification is based on the analysis of specific regions of DNA, known as short tandem repeats (STRs). These STRs are short sequences of DNA that are repeated multiple times in a row, and the number of repeats varies significantly between individuals.

The process of creating a DNA profile typically involves collecting a biological sample, such as blood, saliva, hair follicles, or semen. From this sample, DNA is extracted and then amplified using a technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR allows scientists to make millions of copies of the specific STR regions of interest. These amplified STR regions are then analyzed, usually by capillary electrophoresis, to determine the length of each repeat. The combination of these lengths across a set of standardized STR loci creates the unique DNA profile.
