DGUVs

DGUV, short for Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung, is the umbrella organization of Germany’s statutory accident insurance institutions. Its member bodies include the Berufsgenossenschaften (occupational accident insurers) and Unfallkassen (local statutory accident funds). The DGUV coordinates the work of its members, represents their common interests to policymakers, and serves as a central point of contact for questions related to the statutory accident insurance system.

The DGUV’s mandate is defined by the Social Code Book VII (SGB VII). It supports prevention of work-related accidents and diseases, promotes occupational safety and health, and oversees rehabilitation, medical treatment, and benefits for insured persons after an accident. It also collects statistics, conducts research on safety and health, and publishes guidelines and information material for employers, employees, and the public.

Activities include developing technical safety standards, disseminating DGUV Vorschriften and DGUV Information, and offering training and qualification programs for prevention professionals. The DGUV coordinates national campaigns and collaborates with employers’ associations, trade unions, authorities, and international organizations to advance safety and health at work.

Governance and funding: The DGUV is funded by contributions from employers and employees through its member insurers. Decision-making involves representatives from both the employers’ and employees’ sides. The organization serves as a central authority for the German statutory accident insurance system and aims to reduce accidents and support effective rehabilitation and return to work.
