DENIC

DENIC eG is the official registry for the top-level domain .de, the country-code TLD for Germany. Based in Frankfurt am Main, it operates the registry infrastructure and maintains the authoritative database of all registered .de domain names. Registrations under .de are processed through a network of accredited registrars, with DENIC responsible for policy, operational stability, and the technical integrity of the zone.

DENIC was established as an Eingetragene Genossenschaft (eG) to operate the .de registry. IANA delegated the management of the .de zone to DENIC in the mid-1990s, and the cooperative has since been the central registry for Germany’s country-code domain. The organization maintains the .de zone file, runs DNS servers, and provides a WHOIS service. It also supports DNSSEC deployment for .de and oversees the rules that govern who may register names and under what conditions.

DENIC engages with registrars under contractual arrangements and develops registry policies in coordination with stakeholders. Governance is provided by a board of directors and a general assembly consisting of member organizations, reflecting the cooperative nature of DENIC.

Internationally, DENIC participates in the European registry community and works with bodies such as CENTR and ICANN/IANA on relevant policy and security initiatives.
