DELTAban

DELTAban is a type of disinfectant and antiseptic solution commonly used in healthcare settings. It is primarily composed of glutaraldehyde, a potent biocide effective against a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. DELTAban is known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and its ability to sterilize medical equipment that cannot withstand heat sterilization.

The solution is typically used for cold sterilization of heat-sensitive medical and dental instruments such as endoscopes, surgical tools, and respiratory therapy equipment. Its effectiveness stems from glutaraldehyde's ability to cross-link proteins and nucleic acids within microbial cells, leading to their inactivation and death. Due to its chemical nature, proper handling and ventilation are essential when using DELTAban, as it can be irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.

DELTAban solutions are generally prepared by diluting a concentrated glutaraldehyde product with water to a specific working concentration, often around 2%. The immersion time required for sterilization varies depending on the specific product, the type of instrument, and the level of microbial contamination. After immersion, instruments must be thoroughly rinsed with sterile water to remove any residual glutaraldehyde before use. While highly effective, the use of glutaraldehyde has also led to the development of alternative sterilization methods due to concerns about its toxicity and potential for allergic reactions in some individuals.
