Cutometer

Cutometer is a non-invasive instrument used to measure the mechanical properties of the skin by suction. Produced by Courage+Khazaka Electronic GmbH and widely employed in dermatology, cosmetic science, and clinical research, it analyzes how skin deforms and recovers under controlled negative pressure.

Principle and method: A probe with a circular opening is applied to the skin and a calibrated vacuum is briefly drawn. The skin is drawn into the probe and a sensor records the resulting deformation over time, producing a deformation–time curve. From this curve, several parameters are derived that reflect distensibility, elasticity, and creep. Typical measures include immediate distension (how far the skin moves into the aperture during suction), final distension (the total deformation at the end of suction), and residual deformation after the suction is released. Elasticity indices often relate the elastic portion of deformation to the total or final deformation.

Interpretation: Higher distension indicates greater skin laxity, while higher elasticity values suggest faster recovery after deformation. Creep describes time-dependent deformation under sustained load. Values are influenced by factors such as anatomical site, age, hydration, temperature, and testing protocol.

Applications: The Cutometer is used to quantify skin mechanical properties for research and product development. Applications include assessing aging-related changes, evaluating the efficacy of topical formulations, monitoring cosmetic or dermatologic treatments, and comparing skin properties across populations or over time.

Limitations: Measurements can be affected by operator technique, probe placement, and environmental conditions. While informative about mechanical behavior, the results reflect composite tissue properties and may not isolate a single intrinsic parameter. Standardized protocols are important for comparability.
