Curiosité is a noun in French that denotes the desire to know or learn something. It covers a propensity to explore, inquire, and seek information about people, objects, events, or phenomena. In everyday use, it encompasses both a constructive motive for knowledge and a sometimes negative impulse to pry into others’ affairs.

Etymology: The term derives from Medieval Latin curiositas, from curiosus “careful, inquisitive,” through Old French curiosité into modern French. Over time, the sense shifted from keenness of attention to a broader appetite for knowledge.

In psychology and education: Curiosity is considered a core driver of learning. Epistemic curiosity refers to the motivation to acquire new knowledge or solve intellectual problems; perceptual or diversive curiosity concerns seeking novel sensations or experiences. Triggers include novelty, uncertainty, and the anticipation of reward. Neurobiologically, curiosity engages dopaminergic circuits and enhances memory consolidation, making information learned while curious more memorable.

Cultural and social dimensions: Curiosity is valorized in scientific and educational contexts as a catalyst for discovery and innovation. In social settings, it can be read as nosiness or invasion of privacy, depending on intent and boundaries.
