Csiszolóanyagok, often translated as abrasives, are hard granular materials used to shape, finish, or smooth other materials. They are typically used in conjunction with a grinding tool such as a grinding wheel, sandpaper, or polishing cloth. The effectiveness of a csiszolóanyag depends on its hardness, toughness, and particle shape.

Commonly used csiszolóanyagok include natural materials like garnet, emery, and diamond, as well as manufactured materials such as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, and boron carbide. Aluminum oxide is widely used for general-purpose grinding and finishing of metals and wood due to its durability and cost-effectiveness. Silicon carbide is harder and more brittle, making it suitable for grinding hard, brittle materials like ceramics, glass, and non-ferrous metals. Diamond, the hardest known substance, is reserved for the most demanding applications, such as grinding extremely hard materials or for high-precision finishing.

Csiszolóanyagok are manufactured in various grit sizes, which refers to the size of the abrasive particles. Finer grits result in a smoother finish, while coarser grits are used for rapid material removal. They are applied to a backing material, such as paper, cloth, or plastic, to create sheets, belts, or discs for different applications.
