Csapágytömítések, commonly known in English as bearing seals, are crucial components designed to prevent contamination from entering a bearing and to retain lubricant within it. Their primary function is to maintain the integrity and operational lifespan of rolling-element bearings by creating a barrier against external elements like dirt, dust, water, and other debris. Simultaneously, they ensure that the lubricating grease or oil remains inside the bearing where it is needed to reduce friction and wear.

There are various types of csapágytömítések, each suited for different operating conditions and bearing designs. Common types include contact seals and non-contact seals. Contact seals, such as lip seals, make physical contact with the rotating shaft or an inner ring of the bearing. While effective at sealing, they can generate heat and wear over time. Non-contact seals, like labyrinth seals, use intricate paths or clearances to create a tortuous route for contaminants, minimizing friction and wear but offering a less absolute seal than contact types. Material selection for seals is also critical, with common materials including rubber (nitrile, neoprene, silicone), PTFE, and various elastomers, chosen based on factors like temperature resistance, chemical compatibility, and sealing effectiveness required.

Damaged or worn seals can lead to premature bearing failure, resulting in increased downtime and maintenance costs. Therefore, inspecting seals during regular maintenance and replacing them when necessary is a standard practice in many industrial and automotive applications.
