Cryptotermes

Cryptotermes is a genus of termites commonly known as powderpost termites. These insects are subterranean in their life cycle but forage for wood above ground. They are distinguished by their pale, soft bodies and their habit of excavating galleries within wood, leaving behind characteristic piles of fecal pellets, often referred to as "frass." This frass is granular and resembles fine sawdust or sand.

Powderpost termites are found worldwide, with several species considered significant pests of wooden structures and furniture. They prefer seasoned, dry wood, and their presence can indicate a problem with moisture control in buildings, as they often colonize wood that has been previously damaged by dampness. Unlike some other termite species, Cryptotermes do not typically build mud tubes for protection as they are often found entirely within the wood they infest.

The lifecycle of Cryptotermes involves a queen, king, workers, and soldiers. Workers are responsible for foraging and excavating, while soldiers have enlarged heads and mandibles to defend the colony. Reproduction occurs when winged reproductives, or swarmers, emerge from infested wood to mate and establish new colonies. Control and eradication often involve chemical treatments applied directly to infested wood or fumigation of entire structures.
