This method is particularly effective for perishable goods, time-sensitive products, or items with high demand that can be consolidated and distributed quickly.

The process typically involves careful planning and coordination. Inbound shipments are scheduled to arrive at specific times, and outbound routes are pre-determined. Technology, such as warehouse management systems (WMS) and radio-frequency identification (RFID), plays a crucial role in tracking inventory and managing the flow of goods efficiently. The layout of a cross-docking facility is usually designed to facilitate a smooth and direct movement of products from receiving docks to shipping docks.
