It differs from one crop to another and even among varieties, regions, and seasons, requiring knowledge of a crop’s phenology and response to management.

Examples include nitrogen management for cereals, nutrient schedules for fruiting crops, or irrigation regimes synchronized with critical growth stages in crops such as rice or vegetables. Crop-specific strategies may also involve selecting varieties and crop rotations that complement soil fertility and water availability.

Benefits include higher yields and quality, reduced input costs, and lower environmental impact due to targeted resource use. Limitations include the need for detailed agronomic data, advisory services, and monitoring capacity. Risks involve overspecialization that reduces flexibility and potential dependence on specific inputs or suppliers.

In modern agriculture, crop-specific approaches are often implemented through site-specific management and precision agriculture, aided by field scouting, sensor data, and decision-support systems to adapt practices to local conditions and changing climates.
